Holly Springs, NC - Greenscape Inc. team members volunteered this past weekend at Urban Ministries of Wake County doing landscape clean-up and enhancement to prepare the facility for the upcoming May 17 Coop Carnival and the Tour D'Coop, a full-day garden tour promoting back yard poultry, beekeeping and urban farming. The annual event raises non-perishable food items and financial donations for Urban Ministries.
"The Green Team is very focused on encouraging people to live healthier lives outdoors," says Daniel Currin, president of Greenscape. "So when Urban Ministries asked for our help in getting their landscaping in shape for their first Coop Carnival (part of the Tour D'Coop event), we saw a great opportunity to not only encourage people to support Urban Ministries but also to get them outdoors and maybe even involved in urban gardening. For years we have heard about a lack of access to fresh and healthy foods in urban areas. The Tour D'Coop proves urban gardens are a viable option." All Tour proceeds benefit Urban Ministries.
"Food insecurity is a growing problem, partly due to cuts in government programs at all levels," says John Welch, development director for Urban Ministries. "At Urban Ministries of Wake County we have increased the number of families to whom we provide a week of groceries from 40 per day to 50 per day and we're barely scratching the surface." The Ministry is always in need of healthy non-perishables, and Welch says fresh produce is a special treat when it's available. He encourages those with extra produce from their home gardens to contact Urban Ministries to see if there is a current need (and storage space) for perishable items, or to sign up for their 52 Week Food Drive program.
The Tour D'Coop takes place on Saturday, May 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. in neighborhoods throughout Raleigh and Cary. The first-ever Coop Carnival runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Urban Ministries and is a great way to start your tour or a good place to take a break. The Coop Carnival will have kids activities, information booths, music and entertainment, a mini food truck rodeo and drinks from Big Boss Brewery.
