NC State students team with Come Alive Outside, the Green Team and the community to make school garden a reality
Greenscape Inc. has teamed up with landscape and horticulture students from NC State University and the Come Alive Outside project to implement an outdoor learning environment at Root Elementary.
KinderGarden at Root Elementary"The Come Alive Outside team recently sponsored a design challenge whereby four teams of college students worked with local public schools to design interactive outdoor learning spaces," says Daniel Currin, President of Greenscape. "I was a judge for the competition and was so impressed with the work done by the students that I approached the NC State team to see how the Green Team could help implement their design. These landscape and horticulture students did a phenomenal job working with parents and teachers to pull together the plan for a "5 senses garden" that will give the students at Root Elementary a great outdoor learning environment. It's a working example of how we can help get kids back to nature and all its benefits." The KinderGarden includes a bird sanctuary, pollinator garden and interactive learning space. The NC State students have raised more than 75% of the funds needed to complete the project, and have set up a fund on KickStarter to raise the remaining funds.
"I see this garden becoming a place that empowers children to engage with and influence the world they live in," says Leena McDonald, Greenscape intern and one of the NC State students who submitted the initial project design in the competition. "As a student, it's really exciting for me to share what I'm passionate about with younger learners. If this project proves to be successful, we can use what we've learned and replicate the project at another school, to the benefit of even more students!" McDonald is a junior at NC State majoring in horticulture and landscape design.
