Horticulture

Horticulture is defined as the science or art of cultivating plants, including flowers, fruits, vegetables and ornamentals. When our designers work with you on the plants that will be used in your yard, there are several considerations, including the scale of your home and property, the size of the planting area, types/size of surrounding plants, and color. Timing of blooms for flowering plants and trees is a consideration when planning your landscape. We also give preference to plants that are native to the area.

Some definitions to know:

  • Annuals: Annuals are plants that generally survive one season. They are typically used for splashes of color in the foreground of the planting bed or may be planted in pots on your porch. Examples include begonias, snap dragons, geraniums, and pansies.
  • Perennials: These plants may die back during the winter but will come up again in the spring. Some perennials may grow fairly large and will work as background plants in your planting bed. Examples include many daisies, mums, and coreopsis.
  • Deciduous: These trees and bushes shed their leaves annually. Examples include maple and oak trees.
  • Evergreen: Trees and bushes that maintain their leaves throughout the year. These include magnolias, hollies, and many pine trees.
